The Grammy Awards generally have a tendency of taking the world by a surprise by their unexpected nominations and winners. But that happens only in some of the categories.

This year they decided to go all out and give out awards in most categories that would make you go "OMGWTF just happened!"

A night full of upsets. A very weird coming out of egg performance by Lady Gaga. And everyone going "Who the hell is that?" at most of the winning artists. That basically sums up the Grammy night.

Now, I decided to take a look at some of the more popular categories of the awards and figure out who were nominated and who won, why they won, what went wrong and who should have actually won.

Not really. I don't really want to do that. And I don't know where and how this thing is going to turn out. So bear with me.

1. Record of the Year

1. Need You Now - Lady Antebellum - Winner

2. Nothing On You - B.o.B ft. Bruno Mars

3. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem ft. Rihanna

4. F--K You - Cee Lo Green

5. Empire State Of Mind - Jay Z & Alicia Keys -  Should Have Won

Although Need You Now is a good track I am very, very, very surprised that Lady Antebellum got the award. I am pretty sure I am not the only one surprised over here. The crowd favourites were obviously Love the Way You Lie by Eminem and Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z & Alicia Keys. My personal favourite here was Empire.. I am not that big a fan of the whole pop/hip-hop genre, but this song had me really hooked and how! Alicia Keys crooning in song and providing the chorus was completely mind blowing while Jay Z's rap empowers and enchants you completely. Never heard a better pick me up song. Love the way.. and F--K you were other strong contenders and the award could have just as easily gone to them. How Nothing on You was nominated will forever remain a mystery to me.

Empire State of Mind did get the Best Rap Song. So yeah, I am happy there.

 2. Album of The Year

1. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire - Winner

2. Recovery - Eminem - Should Have Won

3. Need You Now - Lady Antebellum

4. The Fame Monster - Lady Gaga

5. Teenage Dream - Katy Perry

This award was announced very late into the evening and was declared by Barbra Streisand. So she comes onto the stage. Opens the envelope. And goes - "The Ssssuburbs!!?" Heck, even she was surprised that Arcade Fire got the award. Arcade Fire themselves were probably not expecting the award. But then, can you actually expect a grammy? Eminem gave us what can only be described as a powerful album in the form of Recovery. With songs like Love the Way You Lie and Not Afraid a lot of people were surprised, shocked, disappointed and angry that Em did not actually win this award. Lady Gaga with her Fame Monster was also a probable but many would agree that she does not stand a chance against Em. Again, we have a surprising nomination in the form of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream, but then this is the Grammy's. She too probably knew she doesn't stand a chance against heavy weights like Em and Gaga, but to usurped by someone like Arcade Fire must have been painful to say the least.

3. Song of The Year

1. Need You Now - Lady Antebellum -  Winner

2. Beg Steal Or Borrow - Ray LaMontagne

3. F--k You - Cee Lo Green - Could Have Won

4. The House That Built Me - Miranda Lambert

5. Love The Way You Lie - Eminem ft. Rihanna - Should have won

This one is a lot like the first category of the record of the year. I have gushed enough about Eminem already. Need You Now is a good song, no doubt, but we have better stuff here in the way of Eminem and Rihanna. Cee Lo Green's f--k you was also a equally capable of winning this category, in my opinion, what with it's catchy tune and all that. Anyways, Lady Antebellum takes the trophy - kudos to them.

4. Best New Artist

1. Esperada Spalding - Winner

2. Justin Bieber - Should Have Won

3. Drake

4. Florence & the Machine - Could Have Won

5. Mumford & Suns

This was THE biggest stunner of them all. Everyone was expecting Justin Bieber to easily take this one home. You might consider him a machine manufactured, suits-made, boy-girl, but you cannot ignore the fact that he is big and there are hundreds and thousands out there who just love his songs. Hence the expectations that this one was easily Bieber's. Florence & the Machine were another strong contenders for the title and it could have just as easily gone to Drake. But Spalding it was. She gets the award. And everyone goes who the heck is she? I haven't heard any of her songs but I expect she is good. Or rather hope. She was heard saying backstage that Justing Bieber has nice hair. Not relevant, but still.

5. Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals

1. Tighten Up - The Black Keys - Winner

2. Ready To Start - The Arcade Fire

3. I Put a Spell On You - Jeff Beck & Joss Stone

4. Radioactive - Kings of Leon - Could Have Wone

5. Resistance - Muse - Can Never Win

There is no Should Have Won marker in this category because I am not in direct disagreement with the winner. Tighten Up is a really nice and tight song and The Black Keys got the award just as they deserved. Here Radioactive was a very very strong contender and a personal favourite. Frankly, I was rooting for the Kings of Leon to take home this award. But eh, shit happens, right? You will see a new marker here saying Can Never Win. This is because I hate that song. Loved by millions and used in the Tom Cruise starrer Knight & Day (equally screwed up movie), the song just plain sucks and most definitely did not deserve a nomination. But as said earlier, shit happens.

Ok then. That's all I have to say. The Grammy Awards seem to have taken it upon themselves to go completely against popular trends and put up ultra boring shows that put you to sleep. Let's hope next year they give us something good or within 5 years nobody will give a shit about them.

If you have something to say that is contradictory to my opinions and thoughts, please kindly shove it. Or comment below. Your call.
