This is another of those "controversial and touchy" lists. Everyone has their top ten for everything and nobody likes it when their lists and the top 10 lists on Whackk! don't match.
But you know what, you cannot really do anything about it. Except post in a comment below telling me how lame and stupid I am. That's about as much you can do. Muhahaha. (Or you could get in touch and write for us).
And as is common in my lists, I am not following any specific order, just listing the songs as they pop into my head.
I don't claim to have heard all the songs in the universe, but from among what I have heard, this shit is as good as it gets. And trust me, you WILL like it too....
10. Careless Whisper - Seether
Originally by Wham! (Or George Michael, this shit is confusing), this song can at best be described as very gay. What'd you expect from a guy who looks like a werewolf and is into guys?
However it may sound, it is one of the most romantic songs that makes girls and a lot of guys go weak in the knees. Apart from being a chartbuster you will find it in almost every Valentine's Day compilation out there.
Enter Seether, a band from South Africa, who decided to do their rendition of the classic, metal-ish style. The song is slow, has killa riffs and replaces the Saxophone with mostly guitars. There you have it - a romantic classic, sounding romantic and brutal at the same time.
And yes, the video ruins the song and is dumb and stupid, but gets me a few grins at time.. Please use headphones to listen to the song and refrain from watching the video. Thank you.
9. Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Originally by Stevie Wonder, this song is as funky as funky gets. But hey, turns out you can make funky shit even much more funkier. How?
Ask the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They rehashed the 1973 hit song, 16 years later and gave the song a new life. It got them a whole new range of fans and respect and ended up getting Stevie Wonder too a new set of fans. Like me.
The RHCP version has been featured in many movies (including a Power Rangers movie) like The Longest Yard and the more recent - The Karate Kid.
A quick pick-me-up song that has to be a must on everybody's iPod.
8. Turn The Page - Metallica
Originally by Bob Seger, this is one heck of a brilliant song. Haunting saxophone sounds, a voice to die for and a melody you want to fall in love with. Turn The Page, laments/tells the story of a rock star living his life on the road and shit that goes down with that. And you can just imagine all that in your head as the song plays in your ears.
Metallica covered the song and released it as the first single for their album, Garage Inc. This just so happens to be my favourite Metallica song and the kind that can enjoyed by the people who are not exactly too crazy about the particular band.
You already know what the song is all about. Now, experience it. You HAVE to.
7. Twist And Shout - The Beatles
Originally by The Isley Brothers, this song is oooooooold. Like 1962 old. Twist And Shout is the kind of song you would play on a lazy Sunday morning. And let it play in the background.
Two years later The Beatles decided this song was good enough to be covered by their greatness. And helped launched a thousand old hindi movie songs with Beatles impersonators.
I could only find a grainy black and white video with not that great sound quality. But it was 1964. I don't think they had Dolby surround at that time. Kindly live with it.
6. Knockin' On Heavens Door - Guns n Roses
Originally by Bob Dylan (video 1, video 2), easily one of the most covered artists of all time and one of the best (undisputed) song writers I know. But sometimes he does sing like shit. We shall save that war for another time. Don't let your blood boil too much.
This song has two brilliant covers, one is by Eric Clapton and the other by Guns n Roses. I like the GnR one better. Why? Slash, that's why.
Video time.
5. Darling Nikki - Foo Fighters
Originally by Prince, this song has to be played when your parents are not around. Just so you know, this song is the reason all those "Parental Advisory" stickers were created.
Covered by Foo Fighters (and Rihana), the song is like by everyone. Even by the Prince fans. Although rumour has it that Prince himself wasn't particulary impressed with the FF covering his song. Shit happens, yes?
Listen.
4. Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon - Urge Overkill
Originally done by Neil Diamond, this is a classic that you cannot not like. That voice has been blowing people away since what seems like a few centuries (it's actually been only a few decades).
This song was covered by Urge Overkill (yes, weird name, no had not heard of them earlier, no haven't heard any other song by them) was included in the Tarantino hit, Pulp Fiction.
Neil Diamond purists prefer the original. But that's because they are PURISTS. So fuck them and listen to this song.
3. Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
Originally by Big Mama Thornton, this song will have you up and clapping and foot tapping in no time. Try singing this song on karaoke. I dare you.
This song was then immortalised by Elvis Presley and his version was voted number 19 on Rolling Stone's list of the Greatest 500 Songs. Yup, that cool.
2. Hurt - Johnny Cash
Originally by Nine Inch Nails, this song will continue haunting you long after you are done hearing it.
Covering it is Johnny Cash, an artist from a complete different genre and style. This was his last recorded song as 7 months later, he passed away. The video, embedded below, went on to win the Grammy for The Best Video in 2004. Apart from that, it has won a lot of critical acclaim and as a song, it is very dear to Cash fans. It was almost like he knew he was gonna go away soon.
1. All Along The Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
This one was also originally performed by Bob Dylan. I cannot find the original on YouTube so you will have to just enjoy the cover....
.. which was done by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Yes, a Dylan song by Hendrix. Did you just blow your pants? Featuring on his hit album, Electric Ladyland, this song is an experience of it's own.
Dylan says - "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."
I shouldn't really add anything to that.
Bonus : Desolation Row - My Chemical Romance
Bonus, just for the heck of it.
This one again is a Dylan. Desolation Row features the kind of surreal lyrics you will probably find nowhere else. Trying making sense of it, I dare you. Please don't try if you are not high on some illegal substance. It'll be impossible. Trust me on that.
This song was performed by My Chemical Romance and was included as an OST in the comic adapted movie, Watchmen (which incidentally also featured All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix). The MCR version is highly shortened and nowhere like the original.
Full of eneregy, you will feel like getting up and beating the shit out of a police man. The original video doesn't help either....
