Franks Got The Funk (FGTG), according to their Facebook page, is an alternate rock/Electronica/Funfunk band from Chennai. They are :

  1. Bjorn Surrao : Guitars / Vocals / Harmonica
  2. Sajith Satya : Bass / Backing vocals
  3. Rajan Chelliah : Guitars / Backing vocals
  4. Vikram Ashok : Keyboards and Synth
  5. Shashank Vijay : Drums

So.. I am not going to waste much time in introducing them, because they tell all in this interview!

Q. First of all, I see a skull+hat profile picture on your Facebook page. Slash fans, are we? If not, what's that about?

The bassist and guitarist do like Slash but it has nothing to do with Slash. The picture is actually taken from FGTF logo and it’s Frank with his hat. That picture is all about our songs. We have a song called ‘Old Man’ about a skeleton and that is the skeleton. The hat belongs to Frank and the cigarette is from our song ‘Cop Chase’. The shades are the signature of the band.

Q. Right, now the cliched 'how was the band formed' question? There have been some additions/subtractions to the line up, right?

The band started when we were soon out of school. It started with a different lineup and the people kept changing and it was never constant. Now we have a constant line up and don’t think that it will change. It was a good run with all the line ups.

Q. So.. who is Frank again?

Frank is just an imaginary character. He’s the alter-ego of the band. We write songs based on him and it’s all about his life. We just wanted something new and fresh and this is something which I don’t think anyone has done in this country. Frank wears tall hats and in live shows we all wear them just to implicate the character and tell people about it.

Q. FGTF's debut album is launching soon. Congrats! What can we expect from it? Theme, tracks, style, whatever you can reveal..

Thank you. The debut album called ‘Next Level’ consists of 5 tracks. Initially we considered an EP but we wanted an album. Some of the songs featured are Dynamite, Cop Chase, Old Man and FGTF. The album costs Rs.100. It is a really special and colorful album. All the songs have a different texture to them. They all are different styles so the listener won’t get bored. And that’s how we like to keep it – Fresh!

Q. You have been regularly participating and winning the college competitions along with a few others. How much do you think these competitions help in the making or breaking of a band?

The competition was just the base for us. It was a good experience but now we’re done with college competitions. Past three months we’ve been doing some head-lining acts and various other shows.

Q. After the album release, what plans?

After the release we intent to go playing in Mumbai, Bangalore, and various other cities and spread the love. We also intent to release a few singles around December – this years end. Our other plans are that we are also hoping to play outside the country. We have a lot of plans and we need to make sure it all happens. (laughs)

Q. Who are the band’s idols and inspirations? Your favorite bands?

Each member has their own influence. The common influences are Dave matthews band , john mayer, the prodigy, Red hot Chilli peppers, John Butler trio. We have so many influences.

Q. What about the Indian ones? Which is your favourite Indian band?

We like Avial, Junkyard Groove and Indus Creed.

Q. Any closing Remarks?

Listen to the album. Hope you enjoy it and like our music. Spread the love.
